[email protected] or [email protected]: it is the same message, but it reads very differently. An email address on your own domain name is one of the cheapest ways to come across as a serious business, and it is included with every webhosting package at Etheron.
Why it matters
- You look more professional. An address on your own domain shows there is a company behind it, not just a personal account.
- It reinforces your brand. Every message you send repeats your domain name to the recipient.
- You own your address. Move to another provider and your email address simply comes with you. With a free address from a big provider, you lose that address the moment you want to leave.
- You can grow into it. Adding `info@`, `sales@` or an address per employee later is just a matter of creating it.
What you can do with it
Your own mail setup is more than a single address:
- Multiple mailboxes, for example per employee or per department.
- Aliases such as `info@` and `invoices@`, delivered into an existing mailbox. Handy when you do not want a separate inbox for everything.
- Forwarding to another address, so you miss nothing during the switchover.
- Webmail and your own mail client. Over IMAP your mail works in Outlook, Apple Mail, Thunderbird or on your phone, and you see the same thing everywhere.
How to set it up at Etheron
Email is included with all our webhosting packages, with no limit on the number of addresses. Three steps and you are online:
- Pick a domain name. Already have one? Transfer it to us. Otherwise register one through our domain name page.
- Pick a hosting package. Every package includes email, so choose mainly on what your website needs.
- Create your mailboxes. You do that yourself in DirectAdmin. After that you set up your phone or mail client and you are good to go.
Two things to watch
Set your mail records correctly. SPF, DKIM and DMARC tell receiving parties that your mail really comes from you. Without those records your messages land in the spam folder more often, and it is easier for others to send mail in your name. We set this up for you by default.
Protect your domain name. Your email hangs off your domain: if the name expires, your mail stops too. Turn on automatic renewal and make sure your registrar contact address is not on that same domain. What happens when it does go wrong is covered in our article on domain names in quarantine.
Getting started
Your own email address is one of those small things that immediately changes how customers see you, and it costs you no more than a hosting package you probably needed anyway.
